The Nicotine Dependence Center Education Program brings clinical and research experience to education programs that are geared toward the practicing health care provider.  Programs are offered in your community.

Design a course that's right for you!

The Education Program Coordinator will work with you to design a course to meet the needs of your organization or community ranging from a full Tobacco Treatment Specialist Certification to a customized course created from a variety of core topics.

CONSULTATIVE SERVICES

As an optional service following a customized workshop, NDC counselors are available to work with you and your organization to assist you in developing a new, or improving your current programs.

FACILITATORS

We will provide an individual facilitator or team of professionals to lead your workshop.  Instructors will use presentations and interactive learning techniques that engage learners and meet the needs of participants with different learning styles.

Overview of Tobacco Use and Dependence

The overview includes information on health and treatment implications

LEARNING OBJECTIVE

  • Discuss the social and health consequences of chronic tobacco use and the benefits of stopping tobacco use.
  • Describe the physiologic effects of nicotine in terms of tolerance, withdrawal and dependence.

Pharmacotherapy

Optimal use of pharmacologic agents for the treatment of tobacco use and dependence.

LEARNING OBJECTIVE

  • Demonstrate an understanding of safe and effective pharmacotherapy for treating tobacco dependence

Tobacco Dependence Intervention

Four key components to an effective tobacco dependence intervention

LEARNING OBJECTIVE

  • Demonstrate the following four key components of a tobacco dependence intervention:  addiction, pharmacotherapy, a cognitive-behavioral approach and relapse prevention

Motivational Interviewing (MI) to Facilitate Behavior Change

Key MI concepts which are integrated into a comprehensive approach to brief behavior change counseling.  Basic to advanced courses are offered.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • Identify basic concepts of MI
  • Describe effective methods for engaging a patient and responding to resistance
