The Mayo Clinic Nicotine Dependence Center is pleased to announce we will be hosting a Tobacco Treatment Specialist Certification training at our Mayo Clinic campus in Jacksonville, Florida.
The Nicotine Dependence Center Tobacco Treatment Specialist Certification Program at Mayo Clinic is nationally accredited by the Council for Tobacco Treatment Training Programs. Completion of this program will allow participants to apply for the National Certificate in Tobacco Treatment Practice (NCTTP).
The Tobacco Treatment Specialist (TTS) Certification Program welcomes participants from different backgrounds and ideologies. The program embraces and appreciates the cultural diversity of participants and currently has trained professionals from more than 40 different countries.
The program offers external training within the U.S., as well as international training upon request.
Upon request, accommodation is offered for participants who have special needs.
The overarching goal of the program is to assist professionals in becoming competent in the provision of treatment for individuals dependent on tobacco and to formally recognize this competence. Click here for a full description.
The Mayo Clinic Tobacco Treatment Specialist Certification Training is an accredited program that consists of both online learning and a three-day on-site training focusing on the skills needed to effectively treat tobacco dependence. This course is delivered through a blended learning format in which instruction is completed first online through the Blackboard Learn platform. This course is adapted for individual learning styles, while allowing for a flexible schedule during the online component. The ten-module online training is available via Blackboard Learn and may be completed at your own pace. Plan to spend approximately ten hours to complete all ten modules. The online learning must be completed prior to attending the on-site training. The on-site training is a traditional face-to-face interactive learning experience. Passing an exam and successfully completing both the online and on-site training components is required for Mayo Clinic Certification, and to be eligible to sit for the National Certification exam. Approximately 30 continuing education hours will be provided for completing both the online and on-site training.
Faculty will include Mayo Clinic Nicotine Dependence Center physicians, Master's degree counselors, and education staff. A partial list of topics includes: neuropharmacology of nicotine, optimization of pharmacologic management, conducting a basic counseling session, motivational interviewing and other counseling approaches, and application of treatment of tobacco dependence to people with co-morbid conditions. This training program is designed for professionals already providing tobacco dependence treatment and for those with a strong interest in entering the field. Registration is limited in order to facilitate learning and maximize interaction with the experienced faculty.
There is a clear demand for professionals in the field to have recognition of expertise in treating tobacco use and dependence. The Nicotine Dependence Center (NDC) has worked closely with the Association for the Treatment of Tobacco Use and Dependence (ATTUD) and others to establish standards for core competencies, training, and certification of tobacco treatment providers. The Nicotine Dependence Center Tobacco Treatment Specialist Certification Program has been accredited by the Council for Tobacco Treatment Training Programs since 2010.

Registration course fee includes all online and on-site course materials. Breakfast, and morning and afternoon snacks are provided daily. The Mayo Clinic Certification examination is also included in the course fee. Upon passing the exam you will receive a Certificate of Completion.
We require that anyone applying for TTS training/certification be tobacco-free for a minimum of six months. Concurrent use of tobacco while treating others for tobacco dependence is detrimental to the person receiving treatment. We strongly recommend that all active tobacco users seek treatment, achieve stable tobacco abstinence, and be free of both tobacco and e-cigarettes before treating others.
Minimum required degree is an Associate’s degree in any field.
Fluency in written and spoken English is essential for success in the program. Applicants must be able to demonstrate objective competency in English to participate fully in the program. You may be required to submit results from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or equivalent examination.
Participants who cancel registration 21 days or more before the on-site start date will receive a full refund (minus a $100 administrative fee). The cancellation must be received in writing. Email address is: email@example.com

The Nicotine Dependence Center Education Program reserves the right to cancel or postpone any course due to unforeseen circumstances. In the unlikely event that the NDC Education Program must cancel or postpone a course, the registration fee will be fully refunded, but the NDC Education Program is not responsible for any related costs, charges or expenses, including fees assessed with airline, travel or lodging agencies.
The Mayo Clinic Nicotine Dependence Center Program Nicotine Dependence Program grievance procedure provides a mechanism to facilitate resolution of conflicts, problems or disagreements raised by individuals enrolled in Mayo education programs, with the exception of disciplinary actions.
Below is a list of four mandatory requirements to become a Mayo Clinic Certified Tobacco Treatment Specialist:
- Successful completion of both the online and the on-site training
- Pass the Mayo Clinic Certification Examination with an 80% passing grade (2 attempts will be given to pass). Participants will receive information regarding the examination at the on-site training.
- Submit 240 service hours. These are hours that must be acquired after participants have successfully completed the course (online, on-site, and pass the certification exam).This work experience is the time spent providing tobacco cessation counseling to patients/clients. Participants have up to 2 years post on-site training to submit these hours to be applied toward certification. More information about the service hour requirement will be provided at the on-site training.
- Minimum academic requirement: Associates degree in any field.
Upon successfully passing the exam, a Certificate of Completion will be provided to the participant. This document is needed for participants that choose to pursue National Certification.
Complete 240 service hours post course training. These are hours focused on tobacco dependence treatment as part of direct patient/client care. Once service hours are acquired, participants will need to submit and receive approval in order to acquire Mayo Clinic Tobacco Treatment Specialist Certification. https://certification.ndceducation.mayo.edu/
Participants must take the certification exam within 14 days after the last day of the on-site training. Participants who fail the certification examination are allowed to retest one time within this same 14-day timeframe.

Renewal of the Certification will require documentation of 18 Continuing Education Hours (CEH) or Continuing Medical Education (CME) credits granted by an accredited organization over two years. To receive full credit towards certification, these hours must be specific to the treatment of tobacco use and dependence. Fifty percent credit will be approved towards certification for courses that are not tobacco-specific.
Continuing education hours approved as follows:
- Tobacco-focused courses - 100%
- Non-tobacco motivational interviewing - 50%
- General addiction or specific addiction courses specific to an area other than tobacco - 50%
- Attendance at Mayo Clinic Nicotine Dependence Center Annual Conference - 100%
- Health Behavior/Wellness/Prevention and Public Health Courses - 50% (These would include control/prevention/public health workshops)
- Tobacco-focused college courses - 1 credit = 12 CEH, 2 credit = 24 CEH, 3 credit = 36 CEH, 4 credit = 48 CEH

Lodging and transportation arrangements are the sole responsibility of each participant. We would recommend staying on the Mayo Clinic campus or securing lodging accommodations close to the training site to ensure on-time attendance.
A limited block of rooms have been reserved at The Inn at Mayo Clinic - 4420 Mary Brigh Drive, Jacksonville, Florida 32224. This hotel is located on the Mayo Campus. Please reserve early to get the discounted rate before the block is filled. Further details regarding making reservations will be included in your Welcome Letter which you will receive by email after registering for the training.
The best airport option will be the Jacksonville International Airport which is approximately 27 miles NW of the training site. The hotel does not provide shuttle service to the airport.

Program information, application process and payments:
What is the cost of attending the Tobacco Treatment Specialist (TTS) Certification Program? Normally $1250.00, although off-campus training registration fees may be higher in order to partially cover the additional costs incurred due to increased catering and technical expenses incurred with hosting off Mayo property.
How many participants are accepted into the trainings? For Mayo hosted trainings, the program accepts 32 participants and an additional eight participants on the waitlist. For on-the-road trainings, 30 participants is maximum capacity.

Is Mayo Clinic's TTS Certification training accredited? Yes. It is accredited by the Council for Tobacco Treatment Training Programs (CTTTP).
What is the length of the training and where is the training held? The TTS Certification is a combination of online learning and also a three-day on-site training which is held at Mayo Clinic's campus in Rochester, Minnesota.
Does the program offer TTS trainings elsewhere if requested? Yes, the TTS trainings can be located elsewhere for a sizable group upon request. How do I secure a spot in the program? Register online and make a payment.
Payment: We accept credit card payment. All major credit cards are accepted.
The Service Hours form requires a brief description for service hours claimed. How detailed does this need to be? We are not looking for documented visits but rather a brief summary of your work experience in acquiring the service hours claimed.
Please clarify the definition of service hours and criteria for approval: Service hours are defined as your work experience in providing direct care with treating tobacco use and dependence with individuals or in group settings. Work experience is approved for either over-the-phone or face-to-face counseling that is tobacco specific.
What type of service hours are not accepted? Classroom teaching, working at a health fair or exhibit booth, or working on public or organizational policy are not accepted.
What is the minimum amount of service hours needed to meet certification requirements? 240 hours post-course completion. (Hours acquired prior to attending the training are not accepted). When 240 hours are acquired, fill out the service hour form and submit for approval. Once service hours are approved, participants will be granted TTS Certification by Mayo Clinic.
What is the deadline for acquiring the minimum service hours? Participants have two years post-training to acquire the minimum service hours needed for certification.
Academic degree: Please indicate highest academic degree when completing online registration form. Although official transcripts are not required initially, we will conduct random audits so participants may be required to submit official transcripts if randomly selected.
What is the minimum educational requirement needed to acquire certification? Associate's degree or higher, in any field.
Will I receive a full refund if I cancel a course in which I am already enrolled? Participants will receive a full refund minus $100.00 administrative fee if the cancellation request is received in writing 21 days prior to the start of the on-site training. What does it cost to recertify? Current fee is $30.00
Can I recertify if my certification is expired? If a participant does not recertify within the two-year time frame, and certification expires; participants will have an additional 6 months to recertify at a higher fee. After this six-month grace period, participants willl need to retake and successfully complete both the online and the on-site components of the training. Participants will also need to pass the certification examination. If 240 service hours were approved from the previous certification time frame, those hours will count toward certification status.
How often do I need to apply for recertification? Every two years.
How many continuing education hours do I need to acquire in order to recertify? 18 continuing education hours (CEHs) every two years.
Continuing Education Hours are approved as follows:
- The program approves 100 percent credit for tobacco-focused courses.
Non-tobacco courses: The program approves only 50 percent credit for the following types of CEHs:
• Motivational interviewing courses/ training or workshops
• General or specific addiction courses/ training or workshops
• Health behavior, wellness, prevention and public health courses/training or workshops.
• Note**The program also approves college course credits that fit our CEH guidelines; please see the information under the “Certification” tab.
If I attend a motivational interviewing (MI) course, will the continuing education hours be approved for 100 percent credit or 50 percent credit? The NDC program approves 100 percent credit for tobacco-focused MI courses. If it is not a tobacco-focused MI course, only 50 percent credit is approved. If the title of the course doesn't reflect that it's tobacco-focused, please submit learning objectives.
What is the passing rate? 80 percent passing rate is required.
How soon do I need to take the test after completing the on-site training? Participants are allowed 2 attempts to pass the Certification exam. Both attempts must be completed within 14 days after the last day of the on-site training.
What does it cost to retest? There is no cost to retest.
